Yoga and Strength: A Return to Natural Movement

At Subtle Body Methods, yoga is the foundation. It is the practice that teaches us how to breathe, pay attention, and develop a relationship with ourselves that extends beyond the physical body. But yoga was never meant to separate us from the rest of human movement. It was meant to prepare us for life.

For me, that means integrating strength training into my practice. Olympic lifting, kettlebells, calisthenics, and weighted bodyweight exercises are not separate from yoga—they’re extensions of it. They challenge coordination, discipline, resilience, and presence. The same focus I bring to a handstand or meditation cushion is the focus I bring to a clean and jerk or a set of pull-ups.

The breath is the bridge. Meditation is the compass. Yoga provides the awareness to train hard without losing connection to the body. Strength training provides the capacity to move through the world with confidence and longevity.

I believe our ancestors didn’t specialize in movement—they climbed, carried, squatted, ran, balanced, and rested. A natural approach to fitness honors this diversity. We don’t have to choose between being strong and being mindful. We can cultivate both.

At its core, yoga remains king because it teaches us how to live. The physical practices of lifting, mobility work, and athletic training become tools that support that greater purpose. A strong body can hold a steady mind, and a steady mind can create a meaningful life.

Movement is medicine. Strength is a practice. Yoga is the thread that ties it all together.
